Breaking the Spells of Limitation (Part 3)

Are you aware of the patterns of thinking within yourself and others that can limit personal, professional and organizational effectiveness?  These patterns are what we call “spells” as in the old, magical incantations that created either something wonderful or something awful based on the nature of the spell and the intention of the caster of the spell.

Within each of us, locked into our conscious and unconscious minds, we carry “spells” that can either enable us or hurt us in our efforts to live and lead more effectively, powerfully and joyfully.  Having worked as a clinical therapist, an executive coach, a leadership developer, trainer and organizational consultant over the past thirty-eight years, I have catalogued the spells and found ways to re-focus the enabling spells and to break the limiting or disabling ones.

On October 7th, in Greensboro, NC, Staub Leadership International and Sungate Advisors will be offering a morning learning- intensive on understanding and maximizing the positive spells while braking the limiting ones.  This will consist of personal, leadership and organizational practices that serve to shift old ways of thinking, perceiving and reacting that limit personal effectiveness, leadership impact and organizational ability to change and adapt.

I offer one tip in this short blog.  Learn to be an observer in your life both at work and at home.  This means cultivating a deeper sense of curiosity in order to look behind the first two or three explanations or evaluations or conclusions that you typically make.  Be more curious and ask: “What is going on here that I might be missing based on my assumptions, beliefs or ways of understanding?”  Take a deeper look at your life as you are experiencing it right now both at work and at home and notice any places where you are not feeling as fulfilled or joyful or as effective as you would like.  What is going on?  Notice your explanation.  Be even more curious and ask again, “What if my explanation is only a rationalization, what else might explain it?”

The answers to the most challenging questions are not to be found on the surface.  It is only in your deepest heart that you will find the answers you need and that will suffice to leading a more powerful, wholehearted life as a leader at home and at work.  Are you ready to be your best, most authentic self?
